6 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Outfit for a Calgary Summer Photoshoot
Photoshoots in the summer, and especially in the Calgary area, is a fantastic way to capture the vibrancy of the season. Choosing the right outfit can make a significant difference in the overall look of the photos but ultimately how you feel going into it. Here are my six essential tips to help you choose the perfect outfit for your upcoming summer photoshoot.
1: Consider the Location
Think about where your photoshoot will be taking place. I love to suggest places that are signifcant to your relationship or family as a launching point! It could be a park nearby your home, a location of your first date, or a place you’ve seen photos taken before and can only imagine what yours will look like there also. If your taking pictures on the beach or somewhere with water, consider wearing light fabrics like flowy dresses or linens. For somewhere like a park, consider your surroundings and dress in more earthy tones. Bonus: floral prints are a fantastic way to complement these locations, but only one person should be wearing a bold pattern like this in groups of 2-4.
2: Embrace Summer Colour Palette’s
Summertime is all about light, airy and cheerful vibes. Choose your outfit reflecting lighter and brighter colours that complement the season! Pastels, whites, and soft shades of blue and pink work wonderfully for this time of year. These colours not only look great in photos but help to reflect the summer sunlight! Hot tip: avoid red shirts where possible however, as colour casting in bright sunlight can lead to red tones on your faces!
3: Avoid Distracting Logo’s and Bold Patterns
While tempting to wear your favourite branded shirt, large logos and busy patterns can take away from you! Solid colours and subtle patterns will help enhance the photos by keeping the focus on you as the subject. The goal is to create timeless photos and oftentimes, simpler is best here!
BONUS TIP: If you’re looking for photos that are more bold however and reflect your personality, retro patterns such as checker print or colour blocking is amazing! It would have that be the vibe and ensure everyone in the group reflects that kind of boldness which can look *chef’s kiss*
4: Coordinate Without Matching
If you’re doing a photoshoot with your partner or family, aim for outfits that reflect each other, rather than match entirely. Choose a colour palette that is within the same family (ie. earthy, bright, or pastel) and work from there! By doing so, your outfits will begin to look more cohesive and intentional and allows each person to wear a colour or piece of clothing that expresses their individuality.
5: Layer Up!
Summer weather can be unpredictable, especially when photographing in the mountains. Consider wearing lighter layers such as a light cardigan or sweater which not only can you remove throughout the shoot, but can offer some visual interest as well! Even a knitted vest over a dress can add more depth to an outfit. Other layering options include hats, shoes with bold (or folded) socks, or jewelry. Layers and accessories are a great and easy way to add interest to any outfit.
6: Prioritize Comfort
This is my favourite tip for any season of the year. Comfort is key, and goes above all else! You want to feel relaxed and yourself during the photoshoot. If you’re not used to a button down shirt, a dress, or even trousers… avoid them! Did you know that if you feel uncomfortable, your photos will reflect that feeling? Choose your outfits and pieces of clothing that move freely with you and has you feeling AH-MAZING. When you feel your best, your photos will look like you!
Choosing the right outfit for you summer photoshoot can really elevate any photo or gallery. At the end of the day, these are just guidelines, not rules so wear what you feel is right and have you feel your best for your upcoming photoshoot.
