5 Tips for What to Wear: Calgary Alberta Spring Photoshoot

You booked your spring photo session and now the only thing left to do is figure out what to wear. Choosing an outfit for your upcoming photoshoot can be daunting! Before you start ripping out your whole closet trying to find the perfect fit, let’s get into some details.

First of all, being flustered over what to wear to your photo session is completely normal. I want our photo session to be a fun and memorable experience. Here’s my top 5 tips when choosing the perfect look for your upcoming spring photo shoot in Calgary.

1) First Things First - Comfort Over Everything

It’s not uncommon to want to purchase something brand-new for your upcoming couples or family photoshoot in Calgary. It’s also completely fine if you don’t want to purchase something new - whatever you truly want to do for outfits for your photos is up to you. My biggest recommendation however, is wear something that reflects you when you take the photos. If you’re not a dress wearer, or a button-up shirt kind of person, then go with what makes you feel as authentically you as possible. Hell, it can even be a t-shirt and jeans! When you’re absolutely comfortable with what you are wearing, you feel your best! This feeling will also come through in your photos, and that’s how your photos will look authentically true to you.

2) Play with Colours and Spring Patterns

When choosing your outfit, I will always recommend neutral colours as they’re timeless and fit with any backdrop — but springtime is the best for incorporating pastels and patterns that reflect the time of year. Think baby blues, light pinks, and canary yellows.

TIP: If you’re looking for an outfit inspiration for couples or family photos - look to include only one person with a pattern (if couples) or 1-2 people for family photos. Patterns help to draw the eye in but can be distracting when everyone wears one.

3) Add in layers or texture

Texture and layers is a great way for your spring photoshoot outfit to pop against the surrounding background. Not only does it add interest to the photos but helps draw your eye to the main focus - you!! Think light cardigans, textured collars on blouses, and fabrics that are breathable and interesting (like linen).

Make sure there’s consistency in the outfits everyone is wearing. For an elevated and timeless look, avoid baggy pieces. If you are looking for a more relaxed and cozy vibe, aim for softer fabrics like cashmere.

4) Avoid Logos

This is a good one for any time of the year - avoid logos (if possible) on the garment which draws attention away from the subject - YOU! Logos are often distracting. Certainly there are times these work or are hardly noticeable - ie. polo shirts or golf shirts but where you can, try to avoid wearing them! Unless your photoshoot is sponsored by said company, a garment with texture is way better.

5) Coordinate with Your Partner/Family

When choosing outfits for more than one person, it’s best to coordinate with them and not match them completely. If one person is wearing a pattern with multiple colours, try to draw colours from that pattern for a more consistent look.

Tip: Aim for colours that are across from each other on the colour wheel for a bit more visual interest!
