How to Relax and Look Natural in Front of the Camera: Advice for Camera-shy Couples

Being shy in front of the camera is a completely normal and very common feeling amongst most of my clients. The first time you have a photoshoot together could be for your own engagement and you just don’t know how to feel relaxed for it. As someone who has experienced this first hand, I know how awkward you can feel going in to the session: nervous you won’t like the way you look, nervous that you will look stiff and awkward, even with a fun prompt… but I’m here to debunk that! I’m going to provide you with a few of my favourite tips to help you and your love relax prior to stepping in front of the camera, and provide a bonus tip at the end!

Find Your Chill

If you have the opportunity to do something you both love prior to the session, give that gift to yourselves! Whether it be reading a book, cooking dinner together or even having a dance party to shake out your nerves, I highly would recommend it. Getting ourselves into a positive mindset sets us up for success leading into your session.

Dress Like Yourselves!

If you feel uncomfortable in something you don’t normally wear, you probably will pass that feeling onto your photos. Avoid wearing anything too tight or that restricts your movements, a colour that suits you best and a fit that makes you feel like a million bucks! TIP: If you’re not a dress wearer, wear the jeans and a loose linen button-down (think classy beach wear instead).

Be Kind to Each Other

I want you to go into the session thinking only AMAZING things about yourself and your partner. Provide each other with compliments or an act of service (like ironing their clothing) before the shoot! Not only will this make us feel great, but also your partner. Remember: a couples or engagement shoot is about each other, not just one person feeling or looking their best.

BONUS: Extend the Session

If you’re able to arrive 30-60 minutes prior to your session to take a walk around our set location, have a cute picnic, or even a cup of coffee beforehand, I’d highly suggest you do so! Not only will the small walk or activity help boost your serotonin, but you won’t be late.
